The Giver is a book about a 12 year old boy named Jonas who aged out of his childhood. He lives in a world where everyone is equal, and the memories of the past have been erased to prevent conflict. The purpose of this is to create a Utopian world, a seamlessly perfect place. Only the elders truly know what had happened before this community of equal rights and no differences were created. Jonas was friends with Fiona and Asher, who were aging out of their childhoods as well. Once you age out of your childhood, you are given specific jobs. Jonas in particular is chosen to be the Receiver of the Giver. The Giver gives memories of the past to Jonas, and he learns about what the world was like before there were rules laid in this colorless dimension. There are benefits and consequences of discovering these memories.
In my opinion, the idea of this book is very creative and engaging. I love books that bring you into another dimension. The book still held the setting of our earth, however there was lots of changes that made the alternate world very unique. There is major character development which made the story more interesting. Overall I really enjoyed this book and would rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars |
by The Secret of an Old Clock is a book about a will made by Josiah Crowley, and the mystery that lays beyond it. Nancy Drew was driving home in her blue convertible when she saw a child on the street. A van was passing by and the child luckily got to to other side of the road, however she lost balance and fell off the bridge wall. Nancy hurried to the child's house across the road. There lived Edna and May Turner. They began talking about how they were raising the child, Judy, who didn't have any other care takers. Edna and May also mentioned how a cousin of their father used to lend them money, but he passed away. His name was Josiah Crowley. He had promised them a will, but to the Turner's surprise, Mr. Crowley gave his will to the Topham family instead. Nancy had gone to school with Ada and Isabel Topham. Nancy really wanted to help support the Turners, so she decided to dive deeper into this mystery. Nancy's father is a lawyer and decided to help her figure out this mystery. As the mystery unravels, Nancy finds more people who were supposed to receive a will from Mr. Crowley and slowly finds out more information.
The characters in this book were described very well. From the first chapter of the book, I could tell that Nancy Drew was the kind of person who was very polite and giving. Her father was very kind and helpful towards Nancy's interest in the mystery. The Topham family is described as being quite rude and selfish. This book would be great for readers who like mystery books. I would rate this book 4/5. |
False Face is a book about two ancient Indian masks that land into the wrong hands. These masks behold extremely dangerous powers. Laney McIntyre is quite a unique character. She is thirteen years old and her parents are divorced. Laney's bond with her mother is bittersweet. She has a sister named Rosemary, who often stresses Laney out. Tom is half white and half Indian. His mother is white, and his father was Indian, however his father died. Laney was walking her dog Hambone in a nearby bog. Hambone began digging and uncovered several ancient Indian artifacts in the dirt. Tom, who goes to the same school as Laney, found her and Hombone looking at the artifacts. He rushed over and took away what Laney had found in the Bog. Laney secretly kept two of the items in her pocket. A comb and a mini mask. But little did Laney know, this mask is dangerous and holds special powers. It is now Laney and Tom's job to make sure these ancient items are taken out of possession from those who can't control the power of them.
This book would be great for readers who like books with a bit of mystery but also with some science fiction. You can learn a handful of true facts from reading this book but also enjoy reading it because it has a interesting story line. I would rate this book 3.5/5. |
